If you own an RTX 40-series graphics card, there’s good news: a new feature called Smooth Motion will allow you to enable Frame Generation in games that didn’t officially support it before. This means you might see a nice bump in your frame rates, with initial tests showing up to a 44% improvement.
Previously, Smooth Motion was only available on the RTX 50-series cards, even though Frame Generation (at 2x mode) was supported on the RTX 40-series. Now, thanks to the latest Nvidia developer GeForce Game Ready drivers (version 590.26), RTX 40-series owners can try it out. The catch? These drivers aren’t yet available through the usual Nvidia website or app; you’ll need to download them from Nvidia’s developer site with a developer account, which is pretty straightforward to set up.
User Macer discovered the feature on the Guru3D forums. To turn on Smooth Motion, you can use the Nvidia App by selecting a game under the Graphics tab and toggling the setting on. It’s best to enable it per game rather than globally, as the impact can vary. Another option is to use the third-party Nvidia Profile Inspector tool, which avoids installing extra Nvidia software.
For those unfamiliar, Frame Generation uses AI to create extra frames between the ones your GPU renders, effectively increasing frame rates. It debuted on RTX 40-series cards, giving a 2x frame rate boost by inserting one extra frame for each rendered one. RTX 50-series cards can add up to three generated frames, which can increase performance but sometimes adds latency. AMD offers a similar feature called Fluid Motion Frames for its RX 6000 and 7000 series cards.
If you want alternatives, Lossless Scaling is a third-party app that can enable Frame Generation in unsupported games and offers many customization options. Some users find it works better in some games, while others prefer Nvidia’s Smooth Motion. Smooth Motion is free. It might be worth trying both to see what suits your setup.
