Rockstar Once Put 4 Protagonists on the Table for GTA 6
A 2022 rumor also claimed that early GTA 6 plans involved 3 cities, but Rockstar's confirmation only addresses the 4-protagonist idea.
Rockstar Games has confirmed that it briefly considered giving Grand Theft Auto VI four protagonists. The studio ultimately chose a smaller cast so players could spend more time with Lucia and Jason, and Rockstar wants that pair to create the same kind of lasting emotional connection that Arthur Morgan inspired in Red Dead Redemption 2.
After Grand Theft Auto V used three playable protagonists, Rockstar considered whether four characters would be the natural next step. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson explained the decision in an interview with TroisCouleurs. The team worried about “diluting the amount of player time with each, and therefore player connection with those characters.”
Rockstar wanted players to reach the feeling of “I love them both” with its final pair. Lucia and Jason are criminals whose relationship sits at the center of GTA 6’s story, and their partnership can become tense while remaining deeply connected. Building convincing chemistry was a major focus, especially because that connection has to work between both the characters and the actors portraying them.
Nelson said Rockstar also wanted to carry over the depth and world interaction of Red Dead Redemption 2 while pursuing the emotional connection players had with Arthur. Jason and Lucia give the studio a different route to that goal than GTA 5’s three-protagonist structure, with their relationship providing a personal thread through the open-world chaos.
Quieter scenes should make that thread easier to feel. Moments when Jason and Lucia prepare to go out together can establish their connection before the story sends them into another robbery or firefight. Rockstar wants those personal beats to give the more intense sequences greater weight instead of treating every character switch as a purely mechanical change.
An extended look at the game showed one especially tense example. Lucia is beaten and thrown down a flight of stairs, then control switches to Jason. Players cannot hear Lucia during the scene, leaving Jason’s reaction to carry the moment and turning the sequence into a question of concern for his partner rather than just another transition between playable characters.
Keeping the cast smaller gives the narrative more room to develop both protagonists beyond their romance. Rockstar’s writing team was conscious of giving players enough time with each character, while the pair’s criminal partnership remains central to how the story unfolds.
The revelation also connects to a 2022 Reddit post about scrapped plans for 3 cities and 4 protagonists. Rockstar’s confirmation gives the four-protagonist part a real connection to the game’s development, but it does not establish the separate three-city claim. The discussion is documented in the original Reddit thread.
For now, the confirmed takeaway is that four protagonists were considered at some point during development. It should not be read as confirmation that all four characters will appear in the final game. Rockstar’s final plan keeps the focus on Lucia and Jason, with their bond intended to matter both when the action stops and when the next mission begins.
