Roblox is opening new doors for its creators by introducing an official licensing system that allows users to build games based on well-known franchises, such as Squid Game, Saw, and Like a Dragon. This means creators will no longer have to worry about copyright issues or takedowns while developing and even monetizing their projects.
The new License Manager and Licenses catalog provide a structured way for developers to create experiences tied to officially approved brands. It’s the first time Roblox has offered this kind of support, with the rights holders’ blessings, which might urge a lot more creativity and collaboration on the platform.
At launch, Roblox has partnered with companies such as Netflix, Sega, Lionsgate, and Kodansha. Seven franchises are currently available for licensed use: Squid Game, Stranger Things, Twilight, Saw, Divergent, Now You See Me, and Like a Dragon. Two additional IPs will be added soon, with even more planned for later this year.
This update marks a shift in how Roblox’s creator community approaches game development. Fan-made games have always been a significant part of Roblox, but working with copyrighted material has been a challenging endeavor. Now, with official licenses in place, creators can develop games inspired by their favorite shows and movies without running into legal trouble, and they can potentially earn from their work too.
One of the standout additions is Sega’s Like a Dragon. Roblox explains that fans can build original experiences based on the series’ world and story, all of which are officially licensed by RGG Studio. Whether you’re a longtime Yakuza fan or new to the series, this could be a fresh way to enjoy its universe.
Netflix is also expanding its presence on the platform, starting with Stranger Things and Squid Game. These shows are now open for creators to remix and build upon via the new license system, with more titles expected to join the program as it grows.
Roblox’s approach aims to bring fans and brands closer together. Instead of unofficial copies or knockoffs, creators can now make genuine games using real IP, with the chance to be rewarded for their efforts. It’s a notable change that could significantly alter the types of experiences we encounter on Roblox.
