Riot wants League of Legends to keep some frustration despite mage bot complaints

Riot's Lead Gameplay Designer Matt 'Phroxzon' Leung-Harrison said Patch 26.16 will address mage-heavy bot lanes without removing mage champions from the role.

Riot Games is defending a measured amount of frustration as part of League of Legends‘ long-term design, even as mage champions in the bot lane continue to draw criticism. Matt ‘Phroxzon’ Leung-Harrison, Riot’s Lead Gameplay Designer, said the team does not believe the current situation calls for a much larger response than the changes planned for Patch 26.16.

In comments reported by PCGamesN, Phroxzon explained that League needs frustration to remain compelling. One of the things that’s really important for League’s longevity is to have the right amount of frustration in the game.

He connected that tension to the reasons players keep learning, trying again, and experiencing the highs and lows that give matches their character. Removing every source of irritation would also remove some of the risks and reversals that make individual games feel different from one another.

Patch 26.16 will address mage bot without removing it

Patch 26.16 is scheduled to arrive on Aug. 12, 2026. Riot’s planned response will target the prevalence of mage-heavy bot lanes, while stopping short of making those picks unviable. The upcoming changes are covered in our Patch 26.16 bot-lane coverage.

Phroxzon also said Riot wants to preserve the relationship between burst damage and ADCs regardless of the lanes involved. In practice, that means the team can reduce some of the pressure created by mage bot picks without treating their presence in the role as a design failure.

That approach is not based on making every balance change popular. Phroxzon pointed to the many frustrations players can encounter in League, including dying to a fed Rengar without an obvious answer, Wind Wall, and mage bot lanes. Riot’s position is that each complaint needs to be considered within the wider game rather than prompting an automatic, sweeping adjustment.

For players who want mage champions removed from bot lane, the message is unlikely to be satisfying. Riot is still taking action in Patch 26.16, but the goal is to reduce the strategy’s pressure and frequency rather than erase it from the role entirely.

Riot’s position leaves mage bot as an intentional source of matchup variety, with limits placed around its power instead of a complete ban on the strategy. Whether that balance feels fair will depend on how the changes perform once Patch 26.16 arrives.
