Critics have begun publishing reviews for God of War: Sons of Sparta, the retro-inspired side-scroller from Mega Cat Studios released on PS5. As of February 18, 2026 the title carries a 69 Metacritic rating, which puts it in the site’s “Mixed or Average” category.
Reviewers generally call it a competent Metroidvania with solid retro presentation, but most note it does not stand out among the many strong genre alternatives. The score makes God of War: Sons of Sparta the lowest rated entry in the franchise to date, the previous low among numbered and mainline releases was God of War: Ascension at 80. Mobile entry God of War: Betrayal is not listed on Metacritic but received generally positive notices on release in 2007.
The same report also notes the PS Store best-sellers list shows the title selling very well for its scale, suggesting commercial reception may outpace critical response. For more info on the franchise’s current roadmap, a recent report suggests a God of War side-story set in Greece could be on the way.
