Remedy Entertainment is pushing the next big FBC: Firebreak update into the new year. The studio says the Rogue Protocol major update, which was expected soon, now has a target of January 2026 and needs more time because it includes a new game mode. The developer posted the news in a statement on Steam and flipped one long-requested switch at the same time. Cross-platform voice chat is now live across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Remedy wrote that the team is “excited to roll that out today” but that “the Rogue Protocol Major Update, originally planned to launch alongside it, still needs a bit more time” and “We’re now aiming to release Rogue Protocol in January 2026“.’
The reason given is the scope of the new mode. Called Endless Shift it is an endless survival-style mode where squads of Firebreakers are dropped into sealed arenas and must fight increasingly difficult waves. Between rounds players gather a resource called Corruption and spend it to unlock upgrades, weapons, and enhancements. Remedy says this will let players “shape a completely new build every run“.
The studio also promises a link back to the core game. Some corruptions earned in Endless Shift will carry over and can be used in regular Crisis runs, letting the new mode feed into the main progression loop. Those lines are direct from the statement because they clarify how Endless Shift ties into existing content. This announcement lands not long after Tero Virtala stepped down as CEO of Remedy, a move the company has not publicly tied to Firebreak. Fans have suggested a connection between the leadership change and the game’s struggles but Remedy did not link the two in its Steam post.
Remedy has been steadily deploying fixes and smaller updates while it prepares larger changes. The studio previously outlined a sweeping Breakpoint update that alters mission selection and adds a new Job. For readers who want more on that shift, see the studio’s Breakpoint update coverage which explains the mission and system adjustments coming in the near term. For now players get cross-platform voice chat and a clearer timeline for Rogue Protocol. Expect the mode to change how runs play and to bring exclusive rewards when it finally lands in January.
