Rematch, Sloclap’s latest game, has quietly become a hit, recently surpassing three million players across platforms. Known for their fighting games like Sifu and Absolver, Sloclap has now applied their expertise to a football game, surprising many with how well the genres overlap.
After hitting one million players on its first full day of release, Rematch continues to hold strong. Its 24-hour peak player count on Steam remains a healthy 78,500, showing that the game isn’t just a flash in the pan. According to the official announcement on the game’s X account, players have completed over 11.8 million matches, scored 55.6 million goals, made 33.5 million assists, and pulled off 69.1 million saves so far.

What’s interesting is how Rematch manages to blend the fundamentals of fighting games with football mechanics. I don’t usually play sports games, but I enjoyed the game a lot during one of the betas. One thing that took me a minute to get was that passing to your teammate counts as a kind of mixup. It’s not just about 1v1 battles on the pitch. Once I caught on to that, I was hooked. Of course, I quickly noticed some players who hog the ball, but that’s part of any competitive community, right? Now I’m off to practice my tekkers (did I say that right?) and see how far I can take it.
Despite some hiccups like the lack of crossplay and occasional netcode issues, Rematch is a fun and skillful game that bridges two seemingly different genres. It’s kinda neat to see a fighting game developer scoring big in sports.
