Ready or Not has been a standout tactical shooter since its 2021 launch, praised for its intense SWAT-style gameplay. Yet, recent updates aimed at preparing the game for its upcoming Xbox and PlayStation debut on July 15th have stirred controversy among the PC community.
VOID Interactive, the developer behind Ready or Not, has consistently worked to address issues such as aimbotting enemies, AI quirks, and visual glitches over the years. However, the latest tweaks, which adjust animations, dismemberment mechanics, and censor certain content, have left some players unhappy. Several feel these changes detract from the game’s original, darker atmosphere, with a few even claiming it “breaks the product we were sold.” Wow.
Among the technical updates, players can no longer dismember NPCs who are already dead. More notably, content involving nudity and mistreatment of children has been “covered up a bit,” and a convulsive animation was removed. VOID Interactive explained in a Steam Development Briefing that these changes were made because they were “absolutely required by our first-party partners.” The developer also noted a desire to better meet certification standards, despite already attempting to handle sensitive themes responsibly.
It’s interesting to note that external influences on game design are not unusual. IO Interactive’s CEO recently admitted to similar outside feedback, eager design decisions in the upcoming 007: First Light. Yet, for some Ready or Not fans on Reddit, these changes feel like a betrayal, leading to calls for a review-bombing campaign. They also highlighted other ongoing issues and unfulfilled promises from the developers.

Back in 2022, Ready or Not faced a different controversy when it was temporarily removed from Steam due to its depiction of a nightclub shooting. While the current changes don’t seem drastic enough to overhaul the entire experience, the direction toward less intense themes is clear, and some players are not happy about it. Yikes.
Do you think these adjustments will improve the game’s chances on consoles or harm the experience for the PC community? I’m curious to hear your thoughts below.
