Ubisoft Montreal, the creators of the iconic Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, are working diligently on its much-anticipated remake. Although the game won’t be featured in this year’s Ubisoft Forward event, the developers remain optimistic and assure fans of the project’s steady development.
The remake is a chance for the Montreal studio to leverage its experience since the original game’s release in 2003. The team embraces new technologies and applies their developed gameplay, art, and storytelling expertise to deliver a modern yet faithful version of the Prince’s journey.
The remake signifies a chance for the Montreal studio to use their amassed experience since the original game was released in 2003. They aim to showcase modern technologies while highlighting their well-honed storytelling, gameplay, and art expertise to construct a version of the Prince’s journey that meets contemporary expectations.
This project is considered a remake rather than a remaster, a decision that allows the game to evolve to meet a modern context. Michael McIntyre, the Game Director, emphasized the significance of updating key elements such as character movement to align with the anticipations of present-day gamers.
“It has been 20 years since the original game was released, and not only has technology advanced – which of course you would need for a remaster – but I think we, as players and game-makers, have evolved since that time. I do not think a remaster would take enough of those evolutions into account; I think you need to do a remake in order to truly evolve the game to meet a modern context.”
According to the Producer, Jean-Francois Naud, the ultimate challenge is modernizing the game without distorting the authentic experience for fans. The team aims to provide something new for newcomers while preserving the unique aspects of the original game, creating a fresh yet nostalgically faithful version of the classic.
