Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have confirmed in a joint press release that Pokémon Pokopia has sold more than 5 million copies since launching in March. The Koei Tecmo-developed life sim is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, meaning that roughly 21% of the console’s 23.68 million owners have purchased it.
That works out to about one in every five Switch 2 owners. Pokémon Pokopia launched on March 5, 2026, and had already sold 2.2 million copies in its first four days, including 1 million in Japan. Its latest total shows that the strong opening continued well beyond launch.
Pokémon Pokopia ranks second among Switch 2 games
Based on the reported sales figures, Pokémon Pokopia is now the second-best-selling game on Switch 2. It sits behind Mario Kart World, which has sold 15 million copies, although that figure includes copies bundled with the console at launch.
Pokopia is ahead of Donkey Kong Bananza, which has sold 4.78 million copies. Reaching the five-million mark also places Pokémon Pokopia among the best-selling spin-offs in the Pokémon franchise.
Pokopia is now within 850,000 copies of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red/Blue Rescue Team, which has sold 5.85 million copies worldwide. Passing that total would make Pokopia the best-selling Pokémon spin-off to date.
Omega Force’s Pokémon project finds a huge audience
The game was mainly developed by Koei Tecmo’s Omega Force team, with directors who previously worked on Dragon Quest Builders 2. Its performance gives the studio a major success in a series that has reached far beyond its usual action-focused projects.
Pokémon Pokopia puts players in control of a Ditto that takes on a human appearance. From there, the character befriends Pokémon, uses their abilities, and helps rebuild an island. The game combines life simulation with sandbox-style building, giving the Pokémon spin-off a very different rhythm from the mainline series.
The physical release uses a Game Key Card, which contains a download code instead of the complete game data. The game has also received a free update that adds the Dive mechanic and lets players build structures beneath the water for the first time, while the paid Bubbly Basin expansion adds a submerged town, new Water-type Pokémon to befriend, mermaid-style furniture, and new outfits. Bubbly Basin arrived in August as the first wave of the three-wave $34.99 Expansion Pass, which also includes 30 rare Pokémetal items for purchases made before August 31, 2027. Exact launch dates for the second and third waves have not been announced, although the second expansion is planned for late 2026 and the third is planned for 2027.
Pokémon Pokopia’s five-million sales milestone arrives as Nintendo’s new console continues to build its software lineup. For a game built around decorating, collecting, and helping Pokémon rebuild their home, reaching roughly one-fifth of the platform’s owners is a remarkably strong result.
