Playground Games founder Ralph Fulton told Xbox Wire on January 22, 2026 that the rebooted Fable uses a reputation-based morality system tied to how other characters see the player. “There is no objective good, there is no objective evil,” Fulton said, summarizing the studio’s goal to model moral judgment as a social process rather than a single numerical alignment.
Rather than a single sliding meter, Fable anchors morality around specific actions and who witnesses them. If an action is seen by at least one other person, the player can begin to earn a reputation related to that action in the local settlement. Playground Games used the recurring example of kicking chickens. If someone sees the player kick a chicken, that player will start to accrue the reputation label “Chicken Chaser”. If many people witness the action or the player repeats it often, that reputation becomes a known trait for the settlement. NPCs will react to the player based on how they value that reputation.
The system is built to let different populations judge the same actions differently. An action that builds a negative reputation in one town might be viewed neutrally or positively in another, depending on local values and who observes it.
Fable is scheduled for release in summer 2026 and will appear on Xbox consoles and PlayStation 5. Early gameplay footage from the Developer_Direct showcased the open world, combat, and choice systems that work alongside reputation mechanics; see the extended gameplay breakdown here. Players will see how reputations influence social interactions across Albion when the game launches later this year.
