Plague Breaker, the Castlevania-tinged action roguelike from Wozzy Games, landed a sizable update for the new year that adds a stack of challenge modes and 36 new items.
The game first arrived in early access in 2021 and reached full release in 2023. It mixes the class-and-gating feels of Rogue Legacy with twin-stick chaos and a pixel-art, 2D action-platforming loop. Players choose from four base classes – Warrior, Mage, Rogue, and Hunter – can multiclass, and build around weapons, spells, and magic items.
Wozzy Games says it originally planned to add a few items but expanded the update after deciding it “could be a lot more fun than I had initially planned.” Ten of the 36 new items are gated behind specific challenge runs that you must complete to unlock them. Seventeen of the additions are available by default and eight need special conditions to earn.
The new challenge runs are built around big, single-rule twists. In Gotta Go Fast, taking damage scatters your coins across the room like Sonic’s rings, and if you’re hit while carrying zero coins, you lose instantly. Another challenge sets your character permanently on fire for the entire run, turning every corridor into a ticking clock as your health slowly burns away.
New items include several summoning tools so you can call friendly undead to fight alongside you or bring a flying book into the arena to pester enemies. The Infestation pickup spawns mini rat hordes whenever you take damage, which can quickly flip a fight. Wozzy Games teased a mysterious cursed item and told players “you’ll have to go and check the game out” to find it.
The update notes and screenshots show the extra variety will affect how players approach rooms and boss fights rather than drastically changing core combat. Wozzy Games also said an in-game encyclopedia is planned next, adding, “Hopefully that doesn’t end up taking way longer than I expect!”
There’s a short gameplay clip attached to the announcement as well.
Wozzy published the full item list and brief patch summary on Steam news page, and the game itself is on sale for 75% off in the Steam Winter Sale through Monday, January 5, 2026 – that drops the price to $2.99 on PC. Grab it from its Steam store page here while the discount lasts. This update gives players a quick way to mix up runs and chase unlocks without changing the base systems. If you missed Plague Breaker the first time around, the sale makes it an easy pick-up to test those new challenge runs.
