In its latest promotional offering, the Epic Games Store has made the popular cooperative first-person shooter, Payday 2, available for free. Developed by Starbreeze, Payday 2 is a four-player co-op game where players take on the roles of notorious bank robbers. The game usually costs $9.99 and can be downloaded for free until June 15, 2023.
Following the free offer of Payday 2, the Epic Games Store is all set to offer Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition and Guacamelee! 2 as the following free titles. These games will be available starting June 15, replacing Payday 2.
Despite being released almost a decade ago, in 2013, Payday 2’s popularity has not waned. In January, Starbreeze revealed that the game had sold over 40 million copies since its release and boasted of having the largest community on Steam, with more than eight million players. Payday 2 took over the free game slot from Midnight Ghost Hunt, which was previously available to claim on the Epic Games Store.
Fans of the Payday series can also look forward to the upcoming release of Payday 3. The game, published under Plaion’s Prime Matter label, will hit PC, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles this year. The Epic Games Store’s practice of offering free games weekly has been a key strategy in its battle against other digital storefronts, most notably, Steam. The ongoing promotion has offered a range of titles spanning different genres and has seen an encouraging response from gamers worldwide.
