PAYDAY 2 is lining up a major engine upgrade beta

The test starts on June 30 and runs through the end of July while the game moves toward 64-bit support and DirectX 11 rendering.

PAYDAY 2 is heading into an open beta for a major engine upgrade, with the studio saying the test will begin on June 30 and run through the end of July.

The planned changes go beyond routine tuning. The team said the upgrade will bring 64-bit support, a move from DirectX 9 to DirectX 11 rendering, a smaller install size of around 32 GB, faster load times on SSDs, and six-character lobby codes.

According to the announcement, the beta window is there to catch bugs before the wider rollout and to give mod creators time to update their work. More details about the beta will arrive on June 30.

That is a meaningful technical step for a game that has been around for years, and the beta should tell players a lot about how far the overhaul goes. Share your thoughts in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, and Instagram.
