Overwatch 2 has always been known for its wild mix of heroes. Imagine a hamster in a mech suit, a talking gorilla, and a robot alongside human fighters. That strange but fun balance is about to change, and fans are kinda devastated.
Lead concept artist Daryl Tan spilled the beans in a Polygon interview. He said the latest hero, Wuyang, represents why the team is moving away from “oddball” characters like Wrecking Ball and Ramattra. Instead, they’re going for more conventional and conventionally attractive heroes. Wow, that’s a bold move!
Adding more human characters might sound fine, but fans are not having it. Many took to social media to express how much they miss the weird, quirky heroes that made the original game special. One player even said, “What? Ramattra is one of their best hero designs and voice acting jobs. I want more like that.”
Another fan pointed out that the zany mix of the original 21 heroes was what made Overwatch 1 stand out. You can find conventionally attractive characters in plenty of games, but where else can you play as a hamster piloting a mecha, a transforming robot, or a jetpack-wielding woman with a rocket launcher? It’s kinda distinct, right?
One more fan voiced, “I really don’t want only generic, conventionally attractive characters in Overwatch. Our ‘oddballs’ make Overwatch distinct and fun.” So many agree that ditching those heroes might strip away the game’s soul.
Still, Tan mentioned the design team plans to “sprinkle” in non-human heroes over time and teased “interesting stuff down the road.” That’s a bit of hope for those who love the oddball charm. But some remain skeptical. One fan said, “Not all hope is lost, though outright saying they are moving away from designs like Ramattra, which seems to be a huge fan favorite in more ways than one, seems really disappointing.”
What’s next for Overwatch 2 heroes is unclear. With Wuyang dropping soon, more human characters might join in upcoming seasons. Guess Blizzard wants a more grounded vibe for now, but can they keep the magic without those wild heroes? What do you think? Will this change hurt the game’s identity or help it grow?
