The United States Department of Defense has awarded OpenAI a $200 million contract to develop AI capabilities for addressing national security challenges. This contract highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in defense and government operations.
On June 16, the US Department of Defense announced multiple contracts across its branches, including the Air Force, Navy, and Army. Among these, the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office granted OpenAI the contract to create prototype frontier AI capabilities. These tools are intended to support warfighting and enterprise domains within the military.
The project is expected to conclude by July 2026. OpenAI provided additional details about its plans in a blog post and announced the launch of the OpenAI for Government initiative.
OpenAI for Government Program
OpenAI described this new program as a way to bring its most current AI tools to public servants across the US. The company hopes to help government workers reduce paperwork and administrative burdens so they can focus more on serving the public.
Through the defense contract, OpenAI aims to improve administrative functions, such as healthcare delivery for service members and their families, and bolster proactive cyber defense efforts.
OpenAI also emphasized that government use of its AI tools must follow the company’s existing usage policies and guidelines.
Since launching ChatGPT in November 2022, OpenAI has continued to develop its AI models and often shares public demonstrations. For example, in May, the ChatGPT o3 model streamed an entirely automated playthrough of the classic Game Boy game Pokemon Red on Twitch.
