Oops! Digimon’s Official Site Accidentally Name-Drops Pokémon Thanks to AI Translation

A machine translation blunder on Digimon’s website amusingly mentions Pokémon, showing AI’s limits.

Here’s a funny little mix-up that reminds us why humans sometimes have to do the translating. The official Digimon website used an AI translator for an English blog post promoting new virtual pet toys, but the automated translation accidentally mentioned Pokémon, their longtime rival. Yeah, you read that right, Digimon’s site gave a shout-out to Pokémon by mistake!

Digimon and Pokémon have often been compared, with many accusing Digimon of being a knock-off. However, both franchises have carved their paths: Pokémon sticks to its classic, kid-friendly gameplay loop, while Digimon experiments and leans more towards content for adults. So it’s kinda wild that AI translation would throw Pokémon into the mix when the original Japanese text never even mentioned it.

The glitch happened in a post promoting the Digimon Pendulum Color toys. When visitors switched to the English tab, the automatic translation inserted “Pokémon” out of nowhere, a total invention by the AI translator. It’s a classic case of machine translation missing context and making a mess of things. The Japanese version didn’t mention Pokémon at all.

Since the official Digimon site is mainly aimed at Japanese fans, not every post needs an English translation. Still, some merchandise, like these virtual pets, gets released internationally, so the English option is available. This minor error is a humorous example of why relying entirely on AI for translation can backfire, and it made me chuckle.

Looking ahead to 2025, both franchises have significant developments planned. Digimon Store: Time Stranger is on the way, along with Digimon Alysion, bringing the trading card game to mobile. Meanwhile, Pokémon is launching Pokémon Legends: Z-A, a big cross-gen title. I guess Pokémon might have the upper hand this year, especially if Digimon’s site is accidentally giving it a free promo!
