Once Human is rolling out a notable update for its The Way of Winter scenario on June 5, the developers have taken player feedback seriously and made several changes, eager to make survival more strategic and weather challenges more intense. If you’re knee-deep in the snowy chaos, this update might shift how you approach the brutal cold and environmental hazards.
First, Thermal towers have been reclassified as large structures that fit snugly within your territory. Thanks to new permission settings, you can now share the warmth with others. The best part? They won’t hog wilderness space anymore, which is a relief for those who hate cluttered maps.
Then there’s the overhaul of Extreme Weather. Instead of abrupt temperature swings, harsh weather creeps progressively across the map. Each phase introduces new regional effects beyond cold, forcing players to adapt constantly. If you ignore these conditions, the cold’s impact will spread, making nearby areas equally hostile. Kind of like a creeping frostbite you can’t shake off.
A fresh, large public structure called the Chaosium Hub is added to the mix. Players can use a unique item, the Chaosium Heart, to dial down extreme weather in the area. There’s even a boss fight with the Chaosweaver, and beating it completely wipes out the weather effects for that phase. Spending Raw Chaosium here also grants buffs that help you endure the hardships of the environment. It’s a neat risk-reward setup that might change group dynamics in the snowy wasteland.
The scenario’s ending also got an update. All Meta-Humans now face the extreme weather together, and your collective decisions throughout the scenario influence which ending you unlock. It’s a nice touch, encouraging cooperation, though I’m curious how this will play out in practice.
Other tweaks include more precise temperature prompts and smoother transitions between regions, making it easier to keep track of the brutal cold creeping in. The core gameplay—story, dungeons, public events—remains untouched, so the heart of your adventure won’t feel alien.
While the update is still tagged as a test, the devs are eager to see how players handle these changes and plan to keep refining based on community feedback. It’s refreshing to see a team so open to input, especially in survival games where balance is tricky.
