Obsidian is preparing to release Grounded 2 this month, but fans of the original game don’t need to panic just yet. An Obsidian developer recently reassured players that the first Grounded won’t be removed or abandoned anytime soon. That’s pretty cool, right? With so many games fading away or getting replaced entirely, it’s nice to hear that some legacy titles will stick around.
Obsidian has been constantly creating new games, so the announcement of a direct sequel to Grounded at the Xbox showcase caught many by surprise. Usually, live-service games don’t get sequels; reboots or relaunches, such as Counter-Strike 2 or Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege X, are more common. Obsidian explained that Grounded 2 was born from the Xbox One’s technical limitations. Much like Destiny 2 ditched older consoles to build a better experience, Grounded 2 will start fresh from the ground up.
Here’s the best part: despite the sequel’s release, Grounded 1 won’t just vanish. Marcus Morgan, the executive producer of Grounded 2, told Eurogamer, “There’s a strong desire on our side to make sure that our games are preserved.” While Grounded 1 won’t see new story or content updates, it will still get maintenance patches when needed. Morgan mentioned that as recently as April, they released update 1.4.7 to keep the game running smoothly.
So yeah, Grounded isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. If you still want to play it after Grounded 2 launches, you totally can. Obsidian wants to keep that option open because why toss away years of hard work? It’s comforting to know some games won’t be buried just because there’s a shiny new sequel coming soon.
For those hyped about the sequel, Morgan also said, “We’re pushing things forward with Grounded 2.” Even if the first Grounded is completed with its content, the story and experience will continue to evolve with the new game.
