Nintendo Switch 2 clears 10.36 million sold-in in two quarters, outpacing PS4 and PS5 launches

Nintendo reported 10.36 million Switch 2 units sold-in by the end of September and raised its fiscal-year hardware forecast to 19 million.

Nintendo reported that the Switch 2 has sold in 10.36 million units by the end of September, less than four months after the console launched on June 5. That figure is higher than the first two quarters of sales for the original Switch (4.7 million), PlayStation 4 (7.5 million), and PlayStation 5 (7.8 million), making Switch 2 the biggest console launch to date in raw early sales.

Nintendo updated its business outlook alongside the numbers, raising its fiscal-year hardware forecast to 19 million units, up from 15 million, and increasing operating profit to roughly USD 2.4 billion, a 15 percent rise from its prior outlook. The company said the revised forecast factors in US tariff rates as of the end of September.

Regional sales are concentrated in the Americas and Japan, with roughly 35 percent of units (about 3.68 million) in the Americas and 22.6 percent (about 2.35 million) in Japan, where availability has been constrained by stock. Analysts watching the launch told Bloomberg that selling more than 10 million units this early exceeded expectations and increases the likelihood Nintendo will nudge forecasts higher after the Christmas season.

Software for the new hardware is also selling well. Launch title Mario Kart World moved another 4 million copies during the reporting period, taking its total to 9.57 million. Nintendo says that represents a 92 percent attach rate to Switch 2, though around 8.1 million of those game sales were part of hardware bundles.

Other Switch 2 titles moved solid numbers too, with Donkey Kong Bananza selling in 3.49 million units and Mario Party Jamboree Switch 2 Edition selling 1.16 million units in the same window. The original Switch had its fiscal-year hardware forecast trimmed by 0.5 million to 4 million units. Its lifetime sales now stand at 154.01 million, almost equal to the Nintendo DS on Nintendo’s all-time list.

Looking ahead, Nintendo’s next reporting period will include the launch of Pokémon Legends Z-A, which sold strongly at launch and is already covered, as well as the recent Super Mario Galaxy remasters, the upcoming Kirby Air Riders release, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond in December.
