Nexus Mods, the go-to hub for PC mods and one of the oldest of its kind, just underwent a significant shift. After 24 years, founder Robin ‘Dark0ne’ Scott has sold the platform, citing anxiety and stress-related health problems as the main reasons behind his decision.
In a blog post, he openly shared that this isn’t about cashing out or corporate drama but about taking care of himself after years of burnout.
What’s Next for Nexus Mods?
The new owners, Foledinho, Rapsak, and Taagen, were welcomed by Scott, who assured fans that the site’s look and feel won’t really change. Users can still expect the familiar services they’ve relied on for years.
Scott explained the changes will mostly be behind the scenes, focusing on long-term stability rather than shifting the platform’s core values. He emphasized that Nexus Mods remains firmly community-first and mod-author focused.
“While I am stepping back, it’s important to understand that Nexus Mods isn’t just about me and hasn’t been for a long time. The Nexus Mods you see today has been created by a team of 40 incredibly dedicated people, some of whom have been here for over 9 years. They live and breathe modding, they care deeply, they’re experienced, committed, and they’re very much still here. None of that is changing.”
Scott revealed how the pressure of running such a massive platform took a toll on his health and well-being, leading to anxiety and burnout. He felt stepping aside was the best way to keep the site thriving with fresh leadership bringing renewed energy.
“One of the biggest reasons I’ve been doing this for so long is that I’ve never felt that I truly found someone who really ‘gets’ the modding community the way I do. Finding a new owner who would be able to understand and respect the myriad intricacies of both Nexus Mods as a business and the wider modding community was essential.”
Starting in 2001 with just a 56k modem and no big plans, Scott’s passion project grew into his entire adult life. Now, he simply asks the community to keep supporting the site and the team behind it.
“… it’s to continue supporting them, the site, and the community they help nurture every day.”
There’s some curiosity about the new owners, who might be linked to a company called Chosen, known for focusing on growth.
