Amazon has ended development on New World, the company’s big fantasy MMO, and Season 10 will be the last round of planned updates. The decision comes amid large layoffs across Amazon Games, and players reacted with anger, sadness, and a visible outpouring on Steam and Reddit. The announcement was framed as a wind-down rather than an instant shutdown, but that did not stop long-term players from airing their grief. One player who logged roughly 13,000 hours on Aeternum posted an emotional message on Reddit, saying they can’t find the motivation to play and thanking others for the memories.
The reaction on Steam has been brutal. Reviews have become a forum for players to express betrayal and disappointment, with comments calling the move a betrayal and urging others to avoid the studio. Several reviews cite the timing of the Nighthaven expansion as especially painful because the update felt like a sign of renewed investment. The community response has two clear tones. One is sorrow, the kind that comes from losing a shared space where friendships and in-game history were built. The other is anger, directed at the studio and the publisher for pulling back after what many saw as a comeback for the MMO. It’s a messy mix, and Steam reviews are where those feelings are spilling out in public.
New World will keep running for now, and players who invested thousands of hours will still be able to log in through 2026. What happens after that window depends on future decisions about maintenance and server costs, which remain unclear. If you have memories from Aeternum or thoughts about live MMOs after this, drop a comment and share them. You can also follow CPG on X, Bluesky, YouTube.
