Monster Hunter Wilds arrived with a ton of hype and was expected to be a big hit after the success of Monster Hunter World. Critics loved it, and early players seemed on board. But now, Steam reviews have taken a sharp turn toward the negative, mainly because of technical issues and complaints about the game’s length.
Capcom’s latest entry, released on February 28, 2025, has been praised with scores like 88/100 on Metacritic for PS5 and PC, and even higher on Xbox Series X. Yet, if you scroll through the Steam page as of June 20, you’ll see the Recent Reviews tag reads Overwhelmingly Negative, while the overall reviews are Mixed. That’s a massive swing from the initial excitement.
The main gripes from the PC community seem to be twofold: the game doesn’t offer enough content to keep players hooked for long, and performance is a real headache. One user called it “a mess” with “horrible optimization” and labeled the movesets boring. Another complained about crashes and poor frame rates even at 1080p, calling the experience “a scam.”
Performance struggles are a recurring theme in the reviews. Some players say the game relies on frame generation and upscaling tech, ironically making visuals worse without helping smoothness.
With the Game Awards 2025 approaching, Monster Hunter Wilds is expected to be nominated in several categories. However, Capcom might need to fix these issues quickly before the negative Steam reviews do more damage.
