The galaxy far, far away is making its way into the world of board games with an exciting crossover just around the corner. From May 1, players of Monopoly Go will encounter some iconic characters from the Star Wars universe. This collaboration promises to bring fan favorites like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader into the mix alongside Mr. Monopoly himself.
This announcement was made during Star Wars Celebration Japan, revealing that this special event will feature elements from the Skywalker Saga and The Mandalorian. Players can look forward to a roster of beloved characters, including Han Solo, R2-D2, Yoda, Anakin Skywalker, and Qui-Gon Jinn. To make this crossover experience even more fun, a Star Wars Go sticker album, unique tokens, shields, and emojis will also be available. The collaboration is set to run through July 2.
Monopoly Go, developed by Scopely, has already made waves as one of the biggest mobile game launches 2of 023. With over $2 billion in revenue generated within its first ten months, it’s clear that this free-to-play title has struck a chord with gamers everywhere. Interestingly enough, Scopely invested around $500 million in marketing and user acquisition, more than what was reportedly spent on developing The Last of Us Part II.
If you’re curious about Scopely’s portfolio beyond Monopoly Go, they recently acquired Niantic, the studio behind Pokémon GO, for a staggering $3.5 billion last month. It’s worth noting that Scopely operates under Savvy Games Group, based in Saudi Arabia.
A separate highlight from Star Wars Celebration Japan included an announcement for a new Star Wars Starfighter film featuring Ryan Gosling. Interestingly enough, this film shares its name with a PS2 video game released in 2001. At the same time, the movie is slated to premiere in 2027 and occurs after Rise of Skywalker, the original game took place during the prequel trilogy era.
