Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 brought a deliberate dose of familiarity to its multiplayer at launch by reintroducing every one of the 16 original maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009). Developers Sledgehammer Games and Infinity Ward delivered classics such as Afghan, Estate and Highrise largely intact, keeping their original look so longtime players could jump back in without learning new layouts.
The return of those maps was not a straight port. While the maps kept their familiar geometry and visual identity, the teams limited how they interact with some of Modern Warfare 3‘s newer systems and modes. Specifically, the throwback maps did not support certain Modern Warfare 3 modes, including Cutthroat, which relied on mechanics and match formats tuned for the game’s fresh map designs.
Alongside the legacy content, the live-service roadmap added fresh arenas. The first live season, which rolled out in December 2023, introduced three new 6v6 core maps to the rotation. Additional seasonal maps arrived in later updates as part of the continuing multiplayer cadence.
Shortly after the game’s launch, the multiplayer playlist also incorporated a selection of maps from the 2022 Modern Warfare 2 release in a dedicated playlist, giving players more throwback options while keeping the main rotation focused on MW3’s balance and features.
The title reached players on November 10, 2023, with early access available to pre-order customers beginning November 2, 2023. For more on the game’s campaign reveal and multiplayer beta timing, see our Gamescom coverage in our Gamescom preview.
For players who appreciated the old maps, the approach let the series bridge two eras of Call of Duty design. For newcomers, the mix meant a multiplayer pool that paired newly tuned maps and modes with a stable set of classics.
