Master Chief and Doomslayer, two titans of the gaming world, are teaming up for an epic crossover. Sounds like a dream come true, right? Well, it turns out that dream was turned down before it could even get off the ground. Microsoft reportedly said no to a pitch that would have brought these iconic characters together in an episode of Secret Level, leaving fans speculating about what could have been.
The creators behind Secret Level, an anthology series showcasing various video game worlds, had their sights set on crafting a special episode featuring both heroes. In a candid discussion with Collider, Tim Miller shared his frustration over the rejection from Microsoft’s license holders. He pointed out how often he sees people wondering why certain franchises didn’t make the cut when they might not realize discussions were held.
Miller didn’t sugarcoat it either; he expressed his irritation about online comments questioning their choices. “I get a little chafed when I read online, and they’re like, ‘hold on, these assholes took Spelunky when they could have taken Halo?” he remarked. He wanted fans to know there was real intent behind the idea.
He went on to explain how close they came to making magic happen. He spent an entire weekend drafting a heartfelt letter outlining why this crossover mattered to him personally and professionally. Sadly, after all that effort? The response was, “Nah.” Imagine pouring your soul into something only to hear back with a casual dismissal!
The first season of Secret Level has already made waves by featuring 15 original stories set in various video game franchises. Amazon stated that it had one of the most-watched animated series debuts ever for Prime Video within its first week. However, specific numbers weren’t disclosed (thanks for keeping us guessing!).
