Meccha Chameleon’s Hide-and-Seek Formula Is Showing Up Everywhere

Scribble Hunt closely imitates the indie game's paint-based hiding system, while similar versions have appeared in Fortnite and Roblox.

Meccha Chameleon has been available for barely a month, but its paint-based hide-and-seek concept is already turning up in copycat games across Steam, Fortnite, and Roblox.

The clearest example is Scribble Hunt, a game that asks players to paint a bunny character and blend into the environment while hunters search for them with paint guns. The similarities go well beyond the basic premise. Players can hide in different poses, cover their characters with paint, and try to look like part of the scenery. Even much of the interface closely resembles Meccha Chameleon.

Scribble Hunt swaps Meccha Chameleon’s clay-like figures for characters with bunny ears and uses different maps, although the environments reportedly follow a similar visual idea. Its Steam page also includes an AI disclosure, adding another point of criticism to a game that appeared so soon after Meccha Chameleon.

The comparison was also highlighted by GamesRadar’s report on the copycat, which noted that some versions even use the Meccha Chameleon name in certain regions.

More copycats are appearing on other platforms

Scribble Hunt is not alone. Fortnite has a map called Chameleon Hide and Seek, while Roblox is home to several similarly themed games, including Paint to Survive, Paint and Seek, Paint or DIE, and Paint or Oof.

This pattern has affected other breakout indie games, too. REPO has faced a copycat on the Nintendo eShop, and the developers of PEAK previously said they would prefer players pirate the original rather than spend money on a Roblox imitation packed with microtransactions.

For small teams, a successful release can attract both genuine players and people looking for a quick way to cash in on a proven idea. Meccha Chameleon has reportedly reached 15 million players, giving copycats an obvious audience to chase. The original game has also teased a collaboration with a famous Japanese star, keeping attention on the source rather than the imitations.
