Marvel Tokon’s PC Problems May Have Cost It a Shot at 1 Million First-Week Sales

Alinea analyst Rhys Elliott counted 485,000 copies and $33 million from the launch week across PS5 and Steam, while pointing to a sub-50% Steam rating.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls sold 485,000 copies across PS5 and Steam during its first week, with the August 6 launch generating $33 million, according to Alinea head of market analysis Rhys Elliott. Elliott viewed that figure as a minimum and said the 4v4 fighter may have come closer to 1 million sales without its troubled PC release.

The game launched on PS5 and PC on August 6 after a staggered server schedule detailed in the launch-day server schedule. Arc System Works brought its flashy combat style to Marvel’s roster, but the PC version quickly gave players reasons to leave negative feedback.

Steam complaints overshadowed the fighter

Much of the criticism targeted the PC release rather than the 4v4 design. Players reported performance problems and crashes, while the Steam version required a PSN account and offered no Linux support. That last omission also left Marvel Tokon incompatible with Steam Deck.

At the time of Elliott’s analysis, Steam’s overall rating was Mixed, with 2,658 negative reviews. He pointed to a score below 50% positive overall and just 19% positive among players who had spent less than an hour in the game. Elliott interpreted that pattern as a wave of players leaving quickly and seeking refunds.

One popular negative Steam review had more than 1,000 helpful ratings despite praising the game itself. The reviewer criticized Sony’s handling of the PC version, its optimization, and the lack of Linux support, capturing the split between enthusiasm for the fighter and frustration with the port.

Arc System Works has been patching the PC version, and Elliott said many of the reported issues were already fixed. Even so, he believed the early Steam reaction limited organic attention around the game and estimated that Marvel Tokon might have sold closer to 1 million copies if those problems had not dominated its launch.
