Bungie has lined up a new PvE route for Marathon, but it will not play like the extraction mode some players may have hoped for. Vault Breaker will arrive in July as part of the game’s mid-season update, and it moves the focus away from keeping the spoils of a successful run.
Marathon launched in March and has had a rough time building momentum since then, so this new mode will matter. Vault Breaker sends players into Cryo Archive, the game’s endgame map, where crews, duos, or solo players will begin with a Sponsored Kit and work through a series of vaults that grow more dangerous as the run continues.
Vault Breaker changes the usual extraction loop
The key wrinkle is what happens when the run is over. Anything players find inside Vault Breaker stays there, which means the usual extraction reward loop does not apply. The only thing that leaves with them is Vault Data, a new currency tied to the mode.
That currency can be spent on upgrades for Vault Breaker Sponsored Kits, so the mode leans more toward progression inside the activity than building a stash from every successful run. Bungie also said on X that the mode is meant to let players spend time in Cryo Archive “without flooding the economy with low-risk, high-power Cryo loot.”

The idea gives Marathon another lane to push players through, but it is not the pure extraction shake-up some fans probably had in mind. If Bungie wants Vault Breaker to win people over, the loop itself will have to do the heavy lifting.
Vault Breaker could still give Marathon a much-needed jolt, even if it is not the extraction mode some players expected. Share your thoughts in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram.
