IO Interactive is shifting gears with their upcoming 007 First Light, moving away from the cold, calculated world of Hitman to capture the charm and charisma of James Bond. This change matters because it highlights how different Bond’s approach is compared to that of the silent assassin Agent 47 in gameplay and storytelling.
At first glance, you might think making a Bond game is just about adding a few quips and a dash of style to Agent 47’s template. They share some traits: sharp suits, deadly skills, and a knack for danger. However, IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak points out Agent 47 is basically “an empty shell,” while Bond has a strong personality, even as a young agent in First Light. That personality makes all the difference.
Martin Emborg, the game’s narrative and cinematic director, explained that while you can still sneak around like in Hitman, 007 First Light pushes players forward with more confidence and action. Bond doesn’t have to wait for perfect timing or overhear every detail; sometimes, he walks in, talks, or punches his way through. That’s a significant shift in how missions play out.
“You need a lot of patience to play Hitman,” Emborg said. “Bond, he can also just walk through the front door. ‘I’m actually just going to go and talk to them. I’m just going to go punch him right now.’” Wow, talk about a different vibe!
Art director Rasmus Poulsen added that if Agent 47 is the game’s bad guy, Bond is the hero. The focus is on Bond’s journey and saving the world, which means the story and gameplay must reflect that heroic role more than the cold-blooded assassin’s path.
007 First Light is planned for release in 2026, and you can already wishlist it on Steam.
