How does MultiVersus MMR work?

MultiVersus is the game we’ve all been wanting to see on the little screens for a while now. Since we have everything settled and the game is well deep in its flow, it’s time we elaborate a deeper subject. Players started asking how exactly the MMR system works because they want to see their impact depicted in an MMR number. If you ask me, having a high MMR is good, but it’s just a number until the Ranked Matchmaking comes through.

Ranked matchmaking is still not officially released in MultiVersus, but there’s definitely one implemented that’s pulling data from the normal matches. In this way, newcomers can enjoy participating in a fair fight, unlike the high MMR games. Since the matchmaking is different, this is how exactly it works.

How does MMR work in MultiVersus?

In most video games, the Matchmaking Rating or Rank is global, and it determines the skill level at which you’re playing. Here, the MMR is slightly bit different, as it is locked per character.

Let’s talk about the image above. If you play with Bugs Bunny, similar to what KoboldHeart did for hundreds of matches, and you end in the top 10, the next character you touch will naturally resolve in a worse placement, and your initial rank with your main character will stall. The first leaderboard position you reached won’t have the same significance, and you would need to reach the same rank as you did with Bugs Bunny in order to be among the top 10 players again. However, if you swap back to Bugs Bunny, then you’ll continue where you left off. In short, the MMR system in MultiVersus at this moment is character-based.

I've spent half of my life playing video games, ever since the competitive 1.6 era. Now I am happily married to Margarita Kicevski, and have two beautiful children. My goal is to deliver fresh news and updates, but most of the time I want to work on guides. Since I have rebooted this website, I am planning on making it huge. Just you wait!
