Hideo Kojima has revealed that his upcoming espionage project, Physint, is still quite a way off, with a release expected in about five to six years. This news came during a recent interview with French magazine Le Film Français, where Kojima also discussed his evolving career plans and his passion for cinema.
While chatting about the Death Stranding film adaptation currently in production by A24, Kojima mentioned he’s received numerous offers to direct films since leaving Konami. However, he’s holding off on movie projects until after he finishes Death Stranding 2 and Physint.
“Besides Death Stranding 2, there is Physint in development. That will take me another five or six years,” Kojima said. “Maybe after that, I could finally decide to tackle a film. I grew up with cinema. Directing would be a kind of homage to it. Besides, I’m getting older and prefer to do it while still young.”
Physint was first announced in January 2024 during a PlayStation State of Play presentation. Kojima described it as a “brand-new, original IP” and a “next-generation action espionage game.” Interestingly, he didn’t mention Overdose (OD), his upcoming project with Microsoft, possibly because the interview was tied to promoting Death Stranding 2, which Sony Interactive Entertainment publishes.
Kojima’s love for film is well-known. He frequently shares movie reviews on social media and collects film memorabilia. His games often feature lengthy cutscenes that feel like mini-movies, which has led many fans to suggest he should direct a film someday.
Kojima has reevaluated his priorities since turning 60 and recovering from a serious illness during the pandemic. He even left a USB stick with game ideas for his team to use after his passing, showing he’s thinking long-term about his creative legacy.
For those eager to get their hands on Physint, patience will be key. Kojima focuses on finishing his current projects before starting new ventures, including possibly directing a film.
