Hideo Kojima told Wired Japan that he wants to “pioneer a new genre,” and that he prefers not to concentrate on established game types. When asked what he might tackle next, Kojima singled out setting ideas rather than traditional genre labels. He said he likes the idea of hard sci-fi and space settings, and added that he’s a fan of Westerns and would consider one of those next. He also mentioned period pieces but noted those already exist.
The comment is in line with Kojima’s long-running habit of trying to push film and game ideas into places big-budget projects usually avoid. Before Death Stranding launched he described that project as a new kind of game built around connection, calling it a Strand Game, and the idea has echoed across other projects since. Kojima has also talked about using machine learning and other tech in his recent work, we covered his comments about an AI learning rig used on Death Stranding 2 in a past piece about the tech behind the sequel.
Right now Kojima Productions has several projects in motion, including the Xbox-published horror experiment OD and the action-espionage title Physint, so fans will get to see how his next moves play out.
