Halloween: The Game Won’t Launch in Australia or New Zealand After Rating Refusal

IllFonic said the refusal was tied to depictions of characters using illegal substances, not the game's murder-focused horror content, ahead of its September 8, 2026 release.

Halloween: The Game will not launch in Australia or New Zealand after the Australian Classifications Board refused to assign it an age rating. Without that classification, the game cannot be sold digitally or physically in either market when its planned September 8, 2026 release arrives.

The game has received ratings from multiple classification boards in other regions, but Australia did not issue one. IllFonic said in an X post that the decision centered on depictions of characters using illegal substances. The studio had tried to address the issue, but said the game would not be available in Australia or New Zealand on any platform.

Why Halloween: The Game Was Refused Classification

Australia has previously taken a strict approach to age classifications, and a refusal can prevent a game from reaching stores until its content changes or a later submission receives approval. In this case, the restriction is especially striking because the game’s premise already revolves around Michael Myers hunting and killing teenagers.

IllFonic’s explanation makes clear that the violence was not the reason for the refusal. Instead, the studio said the board cited “the presence of a controlled substance.” Australia can permit controlled-substance depictions in some circumstances, but the disputed mechanic was reportedly treated as incentivized use because it provides a gameplay benefit. IllFonic’s public statement did not explain how that substance appears in the game, but a March report citing a hands-on session from the Slash ‘N Cast podcast said a survivor can light a joint and smoke it to see Michael’s map pings, giving the team a gameplay advantage. IllFonic has not announced an alternate or edited version for either market, leaving players in both regions without access to the upcoming title unless the decision changes.

At the time of reporting, listings for the game had also disappeared from Australian retailers including EB Games and JB Hi-Fi, while its landing page was no longer accessible through the Australian PlayStation Store. Steam still had a live store page for Halloween: The Game, although that listing does not change the blocked regional launch.

How the Halloween Game Plays

Halloween: The Game, based on John Carpenter’s original 1978 film, is built around asymmetrical multiplayer matches in which one player controls Michael Myers and four others take the roles of the Heroes of Haddonfield. The survivors must warn people to escape and contact the police before time runs out, while also using weapons and the environment to survive Michael’s attacks.

A separate single-player mode puts Michael Myers at the center of the action and follows the events of the first film, with the killer hunting the teenagers who cross his path. Carpenter, who created and directed the original movie, is serving as an executive producer on the game.

The game is planned for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, but none of those versions will launch in Australia or New Zealand unless IllFonic finds a way through the classification dispute.

For players elsewhere, the September 8 release date remains scheduled. The Digital Deluxe edition will provide access beginning September 4, 2026. In Australia and New Zealand, however, the refusal leaves the game’s regional launch blocked before it reaches the market.
