According to recent insider claims, Half-Life 3 might already be playable from beginning to end. Tyler McVicker, known for his Valve insights, shared details in a YouTube AMA about the game’s current state, development progress, and some interesting features.
McVicker mentioned that Half-Life 3 is “the furthest it’s ever been,” describing it as “playable end-to-end.” The developers are reportedly focused on “optimising” and “polishing” the game, which is likely “content locked,” or at least “mechanic locked.” Interestingly, McVicker confirmed that Half-Life 3 will not be a VR title, which might surprise some fans.
One of the more curious aspects McVicker touched on is the use of procedural generation. However, this won’t involve creating new level geometry. Instead, it will affect the placement of entities like doors, physics objects, enemies, items, and NPCs. This means levels won’t be randomly built, nor will the story change based on this system.
McVicker also shared some tidbits about Portal 3, noting that Erik Wolpaw is eager to make it. After Half-Life 3’s release, many team members might retire, and depending on who stays, Portal 3 could become Valve’s next single-player project. There’s even a hint that Chell from Portal might appear in Half-Life 3.
Remember, these details come from an unofficial source and should be taken cautiously. The last official update mentioned Half-Life 3 moving into a new playtesting phase.
