Grand Theft Auto 6 has been one of the most anticipated games for years, but recent leaks suggest its road to release was far from smooth. According to an insider report, the game’s story was scrapped and restarted three times, which might explain the long wait and some major shifts behind the scenes, including Dan Houser stepping away from Rockstar Games.
These revelations come from a Medium post by Fravilys, who claims to know GTA 6’s development scripts. The first version was a detective thriller featuring three protagonists. It was in development until late 2016 but was rejected by Take-Two, reportedly for being “too dark” and not meeting their expectations.
The second story draft switched gears, focusing on two protagonists: a policewoman and a drug smuggler’s underling with a personality comparable to Trevor from GTA V. This version lasted about 18 months before Take-Two also scrapped it.
The third attempt resembled the second but replaced the policewoman character with an African-American man, a former soldier recently released from prison and drawn into crime. This version was canceled in March 2019. It’s said that the scale of these reboots and the pressure contributed to Dan Houser taking a break and eventually stepping down as Rockstar’s Vice President of Creative.
Wow, the twists behind GTA 6’s story development are quite something, aren’t they? It’s a reminder that even massive projects can go through much trial and error, sometimes behind closed doors. Will the final game live up to all this effort and expectation? Only time will tell, but it’s certainly been a journey.
