Watching a video game adaptation of such epic proportions is always nerve-wracking. But with Sony Santa Monica behind the wheel, God of War Ragnarok looks more than ready to be more than just another successful game. It’s expected to surpass its predecessors in originality and creativity, and we’re more than prepared for a ride.
The fallen god, Kratos, is once again forced to take his son on an adventure through the land of Norse mythology. With so much history at risk, it’s hard not to be worried for them both, but there seems no other option than keep going until they find ingredients that can save life as we know it. The pair is ready to travel throughout this frozen landscape battling larger-than-life monsters.
The relationship between father and son in Norse mythology is often explored through the lens of Ragnarök, an event that foretells demise and imposes an apocalypse. Only this time around, Kratos feels more self-aware, confident, stronger, and more conclusive in his steps.
It’s been confirmed that God of War Ragnarok will take players through each one of the Nine Realms. Three of these haven’t been explored yet, Vanaheim, Svartalfheil, and Asgard. As noted by the developer, exploring the realms will take you everywhere, from verdant, otherworldly jungles to intricate subterranean mining networks. This next installment in the series will bring you a more diverse, beautiful, and mysterious variety of locations than in any other God of War game.
As for the characters, the new character of intrigue in God Of War: Ragnarok is Angrboða, a giantess and mate to Loki. Her son Jormungandr, the World Serpent, has been mentioned before, but we haven’t seen much about her. Aside from the new character, there will be plenty of returning characters that are promised to yield back to the scene. One of them is Freya, who has promised that she will ruin Kratos’ life for getting rid of her son Baldur. Based on combat mechanics introduced in the previous series, fans believe the game is on a good way to becoming the greatest ever, as Kratos’ lovers will have an opportunity to wield the same Leviathan Axe, Blade of Chaos, and stop devastating attacks with his Guardian Shield once again.
With its release just around the corner and tons of exhilarating events throughout the previous series, fans are eagerly awaiting news about what this new game has in store for them. The trailers and cinematics released so far look promising – though it will take more than those short clips to win our faith!
God of War Ragnarok comes out on November 9, 2022.
