Borderlands 4 might carry an $80 price tag, following a trend set by Nintendo and Microsoft for their upcoming first-party titles. However, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford admitted during a PAX East Q&A that he doesn’t have a clear answer on the game’s final cost yet.
When asked about the price, Pitchford said, “I’ll tell you the truth, I don’t know.” He went on to describe the current challenges in the gaming market, mentioning rising development budgets, tariffs on retail packaging, and the delicate balance between appealing to price-sensitive customers and covering increasing costs.
Pitchford revealed that Borderlands 4’s development budget is more than double that of its predecessor, Borderlands 3. While the price remains undecided, he expects it to be announced when pre-orders open, which should be happening soon.
He noted that the price might align with the $80 standard Nintendo and Microsoft have introduced, or it could remain lower. Ultimately, the decision lies with the publisher, 2K Games, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive.
The pricing of Borderlands 4 could also hint at what to expect for other major upcoming releases, such as GTA 6, which is scheduled for launch on May 26, 2026.
As with previous entries, Borderlands 4 will feature four new Vault Hunters: Amon, Harlowe, Rafa, and Vex. For those curious about their abilities and playstyles, a detailed character breakdown is available.
