Earlier this month modder doodlum released a free Frame Generation mod for Fallout 4 that brings AMD FSR 3 frame generation to the game via an F4SE plugin. The mod is available now and works with all game versions and ENB presets. The plugin adds frame generation to boost FPS and stabilise frame pacing in Fallout 4, because heavily modded Fallout 4 is often CPU bound, and frame generation can make frame times more consistent in those CPU-heavy scenes. The mod aims to give smoother playback without forcing players to drop textures or cut content.
How to get it and what you need
- Download the mod from the mod page on Nexus Mods
- Required supporting mods are the Address Library for F4SE Plugins, Motion Vector Fixes, and the High FPS Physics Fix
The High FPS Physics Fix is highlighted by many modders as a must-have even if players do not use frame generation, because it corrects physics at high framerates that would otherwise break gameplay. Installation follows standard F4SE plugin procedures, and the Nexus pages include instructions and compatibility notes. There was an earlier FSR 3.0 Frame Gen mod that was paid, and that prompted backlash from parts of the Fallout 4 modding community. This free release removes the paywall and makes frame generation available to everyone who wants to try it.
Modding communities have been tinkering with frame generation across multiple games recently. For coverage of similar modding work and fixes for frame generation systems, see the modder fix for DLSS 4 frame generation which shows how community patches can address frame generation edge cases. Expect to see stronger CPU-limited performance in heavily modded save files, and less stuttering in areas with lots of actors or scripted events. As always with mods that touch rendering and timing, back up saves and test in a controlled environment before using it on a long playthrough.
