Blitz Royale is Fortnite’s latest mode that’s been grabbing a lot of attention. It’s a faster-paced, 32-player battle royale experience on a smaller map with no building, packed with distinct medallions, boons, and rapid rounds. If you’re curious about what makes it tick and how to get started, I’ve got you covered.
What is Fortnite Blitz Royale?
Blitz Royale strips away the building and shrinks the player count, offering quick matches that last about five to six minutes. The map is smaller and includes familiar locations like Pleasant Park and Retail Row, but the play zone shrinks quickly to keep the action intense.
Everyone begins with the same medallion that grants abilities like infinite ammo or invisibility while sprinting. Three supply crates drop each round, each containing an extra medallion, which can dramatically change how you play. Boons found in golden chests also provide powers, though generally less powerful than medallions.
Players start with shield bubbles and a themed weapon or item, which changes every Tuesday. As you eliminate enemies or survive storm circles, you level up your Blitz Level and earn high-tier weapons or boons, pushing the gameplay to be very aggressive and fast-paced.
Blitz Royale Schedule and Themes
This mode was originally will end on July 15 but appears to have been extended to August 12, according to dependable leaks, though Epic Games hasn’t officially confirmed this. Weekly themes affect the loot available; for example, since July 1 the theme has been “bad bosses,” featuring weapons from past Fortnite bosses. The theme for July 8 is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT).
Rumors hint at future themes like Mortal Kombat and Dragon Ball, but nothing is official yet. Fans are hoping Blitz Royale becomes permanent, and Epic is polling players about possible changes, so fingers crossed!
Map and Item Overview
The Blitz Royale map is compact and features key locations from Fortnite’s history. Golden chests always spawn in consistent spots, so learning a few good drop points can give you a solid advantage early in the match. Personally, I enjoy dropping at the snowy building in Snobby Shoals or the hilltop building near Retail Row for multiple golden chests close by.
Medallions
There are 12 medallions split into four categories: offense, movement, healing, and wildcard. You start every match with the same medallion, but finding extra ones in supply drops can give you a big edge. Here’s a quick list:
- Offense
- Aspect of Combat: Increases ranged weapon damage
- Ringmaster Scarr: Infinite ammo and damage buffs
- Night Rose: Weapons reload automatically
- Movement
- Aspect of Speed: Boosts sprint speed, jump height, and removes fall damage during sprint jumps
- Shrouded Striker: Sprint jump invisibility and longer jumps
- Unstoppable: Sprint speed boost and knocks back enemies on contact
- Healing
- Aspect of Siphon: Gain shields or health on kills
- Infernal Defenses: Passive shield regen and faster reloads
- The Machinist: Shields regenerate up to 75%
- Wildcard
- Shogun X: Infinite stamina and invisibility while sprinting
- Megalo Don: Infinite Nitro effect, boosting speed, stamina, reload, and sprint knockback
- Aspect of Agility: Grants a short-range teleport with three charges
It’s worth checking your medallions in the inventory (press ‘I’) so you can adapt your strategy. I usually root for the Wildcard medallions because invisibility can be a game-changer, or Ringmaster Scarr for infinite ammo, no awkward reload moments!
Boons
Boons provide smaller boosts and come from golden chests or leveling up. There are 10 boons, also split into offense, movement, healing, and wildcard categories. Some highlights include:
- Offense
- Fire Boon: Faster reloads
- Void Boon: Reveals nearby enemies when you knock or eliminate a player
- Movement
- Combat Acrobat: Reloads weapons partially when performing parkour moves
- Adrenaline Rush: Grants unlimited stamina briefly after certain moves
- Wind Boon: Increases movement speed with pickaxe out (not very useful here)
- Healing
- Storm Caller Boon: Replenishes shields in the storm (rarely helpful)
- Agile Healer Boon: Sprint while healing and gain stamina boost
- Wildcard
- Reactive Ping Boon: Marks players attacking you
- Vulture Boon: Marks recently eliminated players on your map
- Gold Rush Book: Speed boost after opening chests
Some boons aren’t very helpful in Blitz Royale, like Storm Caller, since you don’t spend much time in the storm. You’ll want to keep an eye on your inventory to know what you’re carrying.
Weapons and Items
Everyone starts with bubble shields and a themed weapon or item specific to the current week. For the “Bad Bosses” theme, options include:
- Fire Oni Mask: Fires homing flaming projectiles
- Void Oni Mask: Fires an orb and teleports you to it
- Kinetic Blade: Combines melee and mobility with a long-range right-click attack
- Chain of Hades: Hooks players or items to pull them toward you
You can improve your gear by opening chests, supply drops, and llamas. Supply drops happen three times per round, and llamas are rare but offer themed or enhanced items. Leveling up your Blitz Level grants powerful legendary, exotic, or mythic weapons.
Rewards
Playing Blitz Royale can earn you two rewards: the Blitz Knight outfit (by reaching 10 account levels or placing top 10 in 20 matches) and the Blitz ‘Brella glider (by winning three matches).
Tips and Strategy
Here are some pointers to help you get the most out of Blitz Royale:
- Learn a few drop spots: Focus on locations with multiple golden chests to get strong loot quickly. My go-to spots are Snobby Shoals’ snowy building and the hilltop near Retail Row.
- Play aggressively: The mode rewards fast kills and quick leveling. Don’t be shy about pushing fights early to get better weapons faster.
- Use shield bubbles wisely: They start you off with shield bubbles which can save your life. Practice quick deployment for clutch moments.
- Adapt to medallions and boons: Check your inventory often and adjust your playstyle depending on your powers. For example, if you have the Aspect of Combat medallion, favor ranged weapons.
- Prioritize supply drops: Extra medallions from supply drops can turn the tide. Watch for other players and approach carefully.
- Bring two weapons and a mobility item: Carry something for mid-range and close combat. Mobility items like Void Oni Mask or Kinetic Blade help with escapes or third-partying fights.
- Use cover: Even though some players rush straight at opponents, using cover like rocks, trees, or buildings gives you an advantage. Since Fortnite is a third-person game, try to keep cover on your right side.
Blitz Royale’s fast pace and distinct mechanics make it a refreshing twist on Fortnite’s formula. It might just become your new favorite mode.
