Epic Games has just opened the door for Fortnite creators to build their AI-powered NPCs using the same technology behind the infamous Darth Vader character. This move lets players craft NPCs that can chat, react, and even influence gameplay in unpredictable ways.
Remember when Fortnite’s Darth Vader appeared and started cursing, glitching, and causing a stir? That AI-driven NPC, voiced with permission from James Earl Jones’ estate, didn’t go smoothly. It caused alarms, union actors raised objections, and SAG-AFTRA filed complaints over digital rights. Epic found itself tangled in a challenging debate about AI and labor.
Despite the controversy, Epic framed the Darth Vader NPC as a responsible experiment with new tech during their State of Unreal showcase. Now, they’re handing that tech over to the Fortnite community.
Epic revealed that the AI tools behind Vader will soon be available to players through the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). A live demo introduced an AI character named Mr. Buttons, a quirky cosmic figure inspired by Portal’s Wheatley. His mission? Convince players to press a glowing red button.
What’s wild is that the conversation wasn’t scripted. Mr. Buttons’ dialogue was generated live by a large language model, producing unscripted, reactive chat in real time. About 20 lines of code controlled the NPC’s personality, tone, and story beats, yet it felt surprisingly natural.
And it wasn’t just talk. Pressing the button triggered a chain of effects crafted by the creator, affecting gameplay directly. It wasn’t pure chaos either; Epic emphasized that developers can tightly shape NPC behavior and narrative direction using editable facts and prompts.
During the demo, Epic called this a step forward in storytelling. They said, “As game developers, our job is to entertain players, and AI is ultimately a tool to make games more fun and interesting. It enables infinite possibilities for two-way dialogue, just like we saw with Darth Vader.”
In Fortnite’s future, the gap between player and storyteller might disappear, meaning your NPC could insult you one moment, then plead for you to blow up the map the next. Kinda wild, right?
What do you think about AI NPCs talking back and messing with your game? Would you build a chaotic troublemaker or a friendly guide? Let me know your thoughts down in the comments!
