First Impressions of AMD FSR 4.0: Visual Enhancements Revealed

AMD’s next version of FidelityFX Super Resolution showed a clearer picture in early footage released by HardwareUnboxed. The test compared FSR 4.0 against FSR 3.1 while running Ratchet and Clank on two separate PC setups. One machine used FSR 3.1 Performance Mode at 4K, and the other ran the new FSR 4.0 Performance Mode.

The visual differences were noticeable. In the footage, FSR 4.0 reduced a number of the shimmering and edge artifacts that were still visible under FSR 3.1. Even at Performance Mode settings, the newer version produced a cleaner image with fewer distracting defects, which should help maintain visual clarity during fast action and camera movement.

That said, AMD has not confirmed which GPUs will support FSR 4.0. At a glance the feature looked like it might be limited to the newest cards in AMD’s stack, such as the RX 90 series, but AMD has not published compatibility details. I expect AMD will provide a compatibility path for older GPUs, perhaps as a fallback that delivers some but not all of the new processing benefits. This approach would be similar to how Intel’s XeSS can choose different upscalers depending on the hardware.

There have been reports that AMD plans a dedicated event to discuss its RDNA4 GPUs and to show more of FSR 4.0, but the company has not announced a date. Until AMD publishes official notes or a compatibility list, any specifics about supported cards or driver requirements remain unconfirmed.

The improvement in artifact reduction here may hint at the direction AMD is taking with temporal and multi-frame reconstruction. NVIDIA has recently released Multi Frame Generation as part of its upscaling toolkit, and it would not be surprising to see AMD continue developing multi-frame approaches in later FSR versions.

This first look suggests FSR 4.0 is a worthwhile step for players who prioritize image stability at higher performance presets. If you want to see the comparison for yourself, HardwareUnboxed’s clip is available below.
