FBC Firebreak’s developers recently revealed they are overhauling the game’s progression system after realizing that less than 5% of players have reached a level 3 perk. This low engagement with higher-tier perks has sparked changes aimed at making progression smoother and more rewarding.
When I first jumped into FBC: Firebreak, I was hoping for some chaotic, wacky fun with friends, but the progression system kinda dragged me down. The devs admit the system wasn’t very clear or intuitive, which might explain why so few players push all the way to level 3 perks.
According to the v1.3 patch notes, the statistics show that fewer than 5% of players possess a Level 3 Perk. Even fewer equip them. The devs said, “We need to do a better job” addressing why players aren’t using these powerful upgrades. They’re already working on fixes in patch 1.3 and plan further changes in patch 1.4, which is expected to be released late July.
The upcoming updates aim to make progression feel less like a grind, helping players unlock builds faster and experiment more with their Crisis Kits. Perks can be upgraded from level I to III, with the highest level offering the most potent effects and even benefiting nearby teammates through the Resonance System. However, it seems that this was not clearly communicated enough.
Currently, 50 perks are available, and upgrading them is crucial since higher levels have more potent effects. So why aren’t players upgrading? The progression path feels slow and repetitive. You unlock perks by increasing your Firebreaker rank, which involves playing through limited, short jobs with the same enemy types over and over. Plus, you have to play sections of jobs before accessing complete runs, which feels kinda awkward.
I stopped trying to upgrade perks after a few runs because it just didn’t feel worth the effort. And I’m not alone here. Despite these issues, Firebreak recently hit the milestone of 1 million players, which is impressive given its Steam peak of less than 200 players in 24 hours. Hopefully, the recent patches and upcoming fixes will help smooth out the early experience and keep more players engaged.
