Fallout 76’s 2027 Expansion Will Tell a Prequel Story Tied to Fallout 3
Bethesda named Raven Rock as the setting for the upcoming expansion, which will arrive more than a century before Fallout 3.
Bethesda has announced that Fallout 76 will receive a major expansion in 2027 called Raven Rock. The story will serve as a prequel to Fallout 3, taking players toward one of the Capital Wasteland’s most recognizable locations.
The announcement came through an official Bethesda news post, which noted that Fallout 76 had received nearly 70 free updates. Bethesda also confirmed that the game’s journey through Appalachia would continue with Raven Rock.

Raven Rock is a former military base and shelter built into the mountains. Because Fallout 76 takes place more than 100 years before Fallout 3, this will be an especially early look at the setting’s history rather than a direct retelling of the later game.
Raven Rock will take Fallout 76 beyond Appalachia
Raven Rock is located in the Capital Wasteland, east of Vault 76. That gives the expansion a very different setting from the game’s Appalachian map and puts it closer to the world players know from Fallout 3.
The expansion follows Fallout 76’s Burning Springs content, which brought players to Ohio and drew from the tone and ideas of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. Raven Rock will move the game in another direction, with its story centered on a location tied closely to Fallout 3’s history.
Bethesda has not shared a launch date or detailed the expansion’s missions and systems. The announcement also leaves open how much Raven Rock itself will be playable, so more information will be needed before its scope is clear.
