Playground Games says its reboot of Fable will populate Albion with roughly 1,000 individually crafted nonplayer characters. The studio told IGN that it abandoned plans to procedurally generate those citizens and instead built each NPC by hand.
Ralph Fulton, founder of Playground Games, told IGN, “We maybe once thought we could procedurally generate them.” He added the team decided it wanted to craft every NPC’s name, appearance, personality traits, moral worldview, occupation, home, and family.
The studio framed the game as an open world with a playful tone and meaningful choices that affect people across Albion. Playground said those choices extend to how players interact with NPCs, including romantic options. Fulton also mentioned that players will be able to marry any of those characters. The comment follows the studio’s emphasis on handcrafted characters rather than algorithmically produced extras.
The first extended gameplay for Fable aired during Xbox Developer Direct and showed the open world, combat, and choice systems, while it was also confirmed that Fable will launch on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation in autumn 2026.
