Fable Director Is Ready for Persona and God of War, but GTA 6 Is One Rival He’ll Avoid

Ralph Fulton said Playground Games was comfortable with Fable's crowded February 2027 launch window after leaving its previous October date.

Fable is scheduled to arrive on February 23, 2027, placing it within a packed release window alongside games such as Persona 4 Revival and God of War: Laufey. Playground Games general manager and Fable director Ralph Fulton is comfortable facing those releases, although he would rather not compete with GTA 6.

Speaking with IGN during Gamescom 2026, Fulton said Playground Games does not “run scared of other big games.” He argued that Fable is a major release in its own right and that the team is willing to stand alongside other high-profile titles.

“We’re a big game ourselves,” Fulton said. “We hold ourselves to high standards. I’m happy to go toe-to-toe with a bunch of other games.” He then made one clear exception, adding that “there’s just one that I’m happy to avoid entirely.”

Fable moved from October to February 2027

Fulton did not name GTA 6 directly in those remarks, but he described the reason for moving Fable out of its previous October window as obvious. “I think the rationale behind moving us out of October, the date that we were in previously, is pretty apparent to everybody,” he said, adding that he was glad the team was avoiding “that chaotic window.” With GTA 6 scheduled for November, the timing would have placed the fantasy RPG close to one of the industry’s largest upcoming releases.

Fulton also said he had been looking forward to shipping the game in 2026. He joked that he did not want to give the team another January 1 speech about “this is the year we ship Fable,” although the delay meant he now had to repeat it.

Fable was initially planned for 2026 before its launch moved to February 23, 2027. Its new date still puts it in a crowded stretch of the calendar, with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, God of War: Laufey, and Persona 4 Revival all scheduled within days of it.

The October-to-year-end release slate was already crowded with Onimusha: Way of the Sword, The Blood of Dawnwalker, two Star Wars games, Marvel’s Wolverine, Control Resonant, Gears of War: E-Day, and Phantom Blade Zero among the titles expected before the end of the year. Moving Fable into 2027 gives the team distance from the chaotic window Fulton described.

The upcoming game is a return for the long-running series that began on the original Xbox and Xbox 360 under Lionhead Studios. Playground Games, the team behind Forza Horizon, is now bringing Fable back more than a decade after the last game in the series.
