James Ohlen, the outgoing studio head of Archetype Entertainment, says the studio’s upcoming sci-fi RPG Exodus “is in a good place” as he steps back from leadership.
Ohlen posted the message on X, saying the decision to leave the studio head role was made last summer and that Hasbro supported the move. He wrote that after more than six years leading Archetype and balancing creative and business duties, he reached a point where stepping back made sense.
In his statement Ohlen added: “Burnout is not unusual in this industry, and it felt like the right moment for new leadership to guide the project forward. Exodus is in a good place, guided by creative leaders I have worked with and trusted for decades, including Jesse Sky, with whom I originally founded Archetype.”
Ohlen also confirmed he will remain connected to Wizards of the Coast as a creative consultant and will focus on story and world building through his own company, Arcanum Worlds, plus a couple of upcoming books funded by Hasbro.
Stepping Back from Archetype Leadership

The move came shortly after Archetype revealed a new Exodus trailer at The Game Awards in December. Archetype is planning an early 2027 release window for the game, and players can wishlist it on Steam to follow updates. Archetype includes many former BioWare veterans and narrative lead Drew Karpyshyn, who worked on Knights of the Old Republic and the first two Mass Effect games, which helps explain why Exodus has drawn so much attention.
Ohlen’s statement aims to quiet speculation that his departure signaled internal problems. He wrote, “That decision was one I made last summer. While Hasbro would have preferred I stay, the departure was amicable and fully supported, and I remain on good terms with everyone involved.”
Exodus promises a mix of choice-driven narrative and a time-dilation mechanic that speeds up years on distant worlds while the player experiences only days or weeks, a concept the team has highlighted as central to the game’s stakes and consequences.
