Deadlock is Valve’s invite-only hero shooter that finally saw wider exposure in August 2024, when press and creators were allowed to share footage and impressions. The project has a Steam presence, a closed playtest, and frequent patches that have evolved core systems through 2025. I mean, don’t get me wrong, when I last tried the game a couple of days ago, it definitely felt like it’s far from release, which is why I estimate this to happen. But why exactly? Well…
First and foremost, an official Steam page went live as part of the reveal, and access remains gated to invited players. Practical instructions for accessing the Deadlock playtest are available via the dedicated Deadlock playtest guide. A full release is not expected before late 2025, given that a significant portion of the build is still being iterated in early access. Early public comments noted the game will remain invite-only for now and continue to use temporary art and experimental gameplay while development continues.
How Deadlock plays
Deadlock mixes shooter and MOBA elements in a third-person package, with lanes, farming, and an in-game currency called Souls used to buy upgrades during matches. Matches are six-versus-six and revolve around protecting a Patron while trying to destroy the opponent’s. Something like Dota 2 or League of Legends, if you’re looking for a comparison, but here, you’re playing in third-person and using your mouse to aim rather than controlling your character. The game already has an insane roster, and even a small but amusing anti-cheat system (haven’t seen it in a while now) that polymorphs cheaters.
Development has been active, with regular tuning and new content drops. Valve hired Duncan Drummond, one of the co-creators of Risk of Rain 2, to work on the project. October 2024 added six trial heroes to Hero Labs, a mode for testing experimental characters before they join the main roster. December 2024 brought a new entry to Hero Labs in the form of Raven, and the in-game map received a festive makeover documented in the holiday event write-up. In January 2025, several trial heroes were moved into the permanent cast.
May 2025 saw a complete shop redesign, along with the introduction of new items, as detailed in the items and shop coverage. July 2025 applied pacing adjustments, including reduced gun and ability damage. August 2025 brought a significant visual overhaul, a social hub, and six new heroes described in the August update notes, a step that looks toward final polish.
