The history behind the event
The event refers to Operation Suvorov, a Red Army offensive launched in August 1943 to clear German forces from the Smolensk and Bryansk regions. It ended on October 2, shortly after Smolensk was liberated. German forces were diverted from the south, where they otherwise could have tried to stop Soviet troops crossing the Dnieper.
