Elon Musk Promises Tesla Gaming While Cars Drive Themselves

Tesla plans to let drivers play games during full self-driving mode pending regulatory approval.

Elon Musk just teased a wild new feature for Tesla vehicles: the chance to play video games while the car handles the driving itself. This update could arrive in just a few months, but only if local rules give the green light. Imagine killing time on your Steam backlog as your car drives you around, sounds kinda futuristic, right?

On X, Musk replied to a fan saying the gaming feature during Full Self-Driving (FSD) mode might launch in about 3 to 6 months, depending on where you live. So only places where Tesla’s autonomous system gets full approval will see this in-car gaming experience. Right now, Tesla’s FSD still needs the driver to keep an eye on things, but Musk’s comment hints they’re pushing toward full autonomy, and regulators hold the final say.

Tesla cars to have gaming support

Tesla has been slowly turning its cars into entertainment hubs for some time. Past updates let users stream videos, and some older Model S and X versions even supported Steam games directly on the dashboard. But Tesla quietly pulled Steam support from newer models earlier this year, removing the hardware needed for PC-level gaming. Plus, even when you could play Steam games, it was only while parked. So, this new feature would be a significant step up.

Musk’s timing is interesting since Tesla just launched its first Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, where cars drive fully autonomously with a Tesla employee sitting shotgun for safety. The rides cost a flat $4.20 for now. So, while the driver seat is empty, the passenger could soon be gaming away instead of just staring out the window.

So yeah, soon you might be able to chip away at your Steam backlog during those long drives. Does that sound like the future or what? I’m curious how regulators will react to people playing games while their cars cruise along on autopilot. Yikes, but also kinda great.

What do you think? Would you play games while your Tesla drives itself? Speak yourself in the comments below.
